The Central Fire Station with its distinctive campanile was designed by the Dublin City Architect C.J. McCarthy in 1900. The building has been in continuous use since as a Fire Station. It is proposed to demolish all but the tower and replace the remainder of the structure with a reproduction and 2 storied mansard roof instead of its current flat one. This will seriously damage the effect of the towering campanile and the relatively low surrounding structure. The impact of the new roof will not be confined to the Fire Station but will also detract from the Pearse St. streetscape and compound the effect on the skyline of the nearby Hilton Hotel development.
